Bubble Watch

By Andre Watson

As we are inching closer the most exciting time in college sports, March Madness.

We have our annual bloodbath of the bubble teams. 8-15 teams with real shots to make the big dance but 1 or 2 slip ups and it could be NIT time for these schools.

This year the Bubble teams are

LAST 4 BYES

Michigan

Rutgers

TCU

North Carolina

Last Four in

Loyola Chicago

San Francisco

Indiana

Memphis

First 4 out

SMU

San Diego State

BYU

Dayton

Last 4 out

Oregon

Florida

Virginia

St. Bonaventure

Michigan has the best win of any bubble team with their blow out of Purdue and it looks like they’ll be in the dance if they can win 1 more regular season game and win 1 Big Ten tourney game

San Francisco is in a good spot as well, they close the season out with San Diego and 2 wins in the WCC tourney and they should be in.

BYU is looking as good as you can be for being outside looking in, they close out with Pepperdine and the WCC tournament will provide them with multiple resume building opportunities.

If any of the last 4 teams get an at-large bid it will be Oregon. With a sweep of UCLA and a win over USC they already have the best resume of all outside of the bubble teams. The PAC-12 tourney will provide them with a few resume building opportunities as well.

For TCU playing Texas Tech and Kansas twice could be a blessing or a curse. 2 wins and they’ll have more than a solid case for making it in. Lose all three and…you know…See ya in the NIT

Loyola Chicago has to win their conference to get into the tourney as their best performance was an early season loss to Michigan State. The Missouri Valley doesn’t provide many tournament building wins to get an at-large and a loss in the MVC tourney will look bad.

For Dayton and St. Bonaventure it’s interesting, both teams are going to have to beat each other and beat Davidson to make the big dance. Completing 1 of the 2 most likely won’t cut it.

Head Basketball Coach Nate Oats has taken college basketball by storm and has turned Alabama into a contender with his innovative style of offense

For the past 20 years Alabama basketball has been irrelevant. Often performing far below the expectations of excellence set by the football team.

In the 10 year span from 2008 to 2018 the Crimson Tide went through five different head coaches. And made the NCAA tournament just twice. Each year struggling to win games in conference and posting a win percentage of just .485 in the SEC.

Meanwhile on the other side of the state the Auburn Tigers were making their first final four in school history. And was looking to only get better from there. If the Crimson Tide wanted to keep up with instate rival Auburn they would have to find a coach that could change the culture entirely.

Insert Nate Oats…

During the dark ages of Alabama basketball Nate Oats was a high school math teacher at Romulus High school right outside of Detroit, Michigan. Beginning his coaching career there in 2002 and serving as the head coach for 11 years boasting a record of 222-52.

Romulus instantly became a state power. In 2013 Oats had his best year at the school. With an impressive record of 27-1 and a Class A state championship.

That year senior captain E.C Matthews started to gain interest from a lot of mid-major programs across the country. Bobby Hurley who would shortly after be named Head Coach at Buffalo was one of the many college coaches looking to sign Matthews. In his recruitment of Matthews, Hurley grew more impressed by the coaching of Oats than the play of Matthews and hired Nate Oats as an assistant in 2013.

Oats was a major part of the success of Buffalo and became interim head coach in 2015 when Hurley left for the job at Arizona State. Danny White who was Athletic Director at Buffalo at the time, was reluctant at first to hire Oats as the full time head coach.

Who could blame him?

Just 2 years ago Oats was arguing with 16 year olds about taking too long of a bathroom break and now would be expected to run a Division 1 program. Hurley, who knew Oats was the right man for the job. Told Danny White that he would be hiring Oats at Arizona State if he was not named Head Coach at Buffalo.

At this same time White was holding interviews with players which all reflected well on Oats. When speaking to ESPN about what made him hire Oats full time with such little experience he said “What stood out is the connections he had with our players. His reputation as a high school coach -- most people I asked said he ran it like a Division I college program.”

Simon Obi who played under Oats at Romulus said “Coach O was the best coach I ever had, he had me right, that was some of the best basketball I ever played under him.” Another Romulus high school player Jerome Bivins said “Oats had so much control through the whole thing, if you was a 8th grader he had you getting ready for the next level already.”

Nate took over for the Bulls April 13th 2015 and the rest was history.

In his 4 years as head coach he notched three NCAA tournament berths and three conference titles, and was named MAC coach of the year twice. In his last year with the Bulls Nate led his team to a 32-4 record and finished the season ranked no.15.

Oats never forgot about Romulus during his tenure at Buffalo, signing three former Romulus players in his four years at Buffalo.

Oats was becoming one of the most innovative offensive minds in college basketball. With his teams averaging over 81 points per game during his four years at Buffalo. Like Hurley a few years prior Oats was becoming an attractive coaching candidate for many schools with job openings.

Including Alabama.

On March 27th 2019 Oats took on the challenge of building a winning culture at the University of Alabama.

Moving to Alabama has given him a chance to showcase his unique style of basketball to a national audience. A style which is now regarded as ‘Ball n Oats’. A run n gun style of basketball where the offense plays fast and shoots a lot of threes. So far this season Alabama leads all major programs in 3pt field goals attempted with 734 threes attempted in just 25 games.

Oats offensive style is Hingent on four things. 3 point shooting, Pace, Ball movement and spacing. These four components play a key part in pulling defenders to certain spots on the floor to increase scoring opportunities. Oats calls this “Gravity”.

Alabama plays a 5 out style of basketball which means all 5 players on the offensive stands spread out across the 3pt line. Because Alabama shoots so many threes defenses have to guard the three point line heavily or else they will get torched. This leaves the paint wide open for potential driving lanes for shifty guards.

When the guards drive each player on the offense will shift. This makes it hard on defenders who are left with the choice of do I help in the paint to stop the drive or do I follow my man who is cutting across the three point line.

The offense sounds simple but with Oats at the helm it's run to perfection. In Oats' first year Alabama averaged 82 points per game which was the most they’ve averaged since 1976.

Though his first season was a struggle, things started to change for Oats and his crew in his 2nd year. The Tide went 26-7 and was a 2-seed in the NCAA tournament and won both the SEC regular season and tournament championship.

This year Oats looks to continue his success and has a team that no one in the country wants to see in March. The Tide have already knocked off no.1 Gonzaga and defending national champion Baylor. And will look to make a deep tournament run come March.

BIG 12/SEC Challenge Winners and Losers

By Andre Watson

Winners:

Alabama

Though the Crimson Tide has 7 losses this season, no one has more good wins than Bama, with 3 wins over top 10 ranked opponents the Crimson Tide is showing the nation despite being unranked they are quite possibly the most dangerous team in America. The Tide need as many good wins as possible though, because for every good win they have…They have a bad one too. Losing games to teams like Iona, and Memphis along with others.

#12 Kentucky

After dropping a tough loss to #1 Auburn last week the Wildcats were able to notch a key win against Kansas 80-62, a win that come March could be the difference between being a 4 seed or being a 2 or 3 seed. The rest of the schedule for the Wildcats looks workable with a tough stretch in mid February.

Which features a road game at #18 Tennessee Feb. 15th followed by two home games against Alabama and #19 LSU. If the Wildcats can come out of that stretch with at least 2 wins they will be sitting pretty come tourney time

Texas

Beating #18 Tennessee at home is by far the best Texas win in the Chris Beard era, this group though talented never has beaten solid competition, they lost early to #2 Gonzaga and Seton Hall then in conference play dropped their only ranked Big 12 match-up to #13 Iowa State. This win was important though as Texas ins going to be facing arguably the hardest schedule remaining facing; #5 Kansas twice, #4 Baylor twice #23 Iowa State and #13 Texas Tech.

The SEC:

The SEC has been gaining steam over the past couple years and winning this challenge further puts respect on the conference's name. This year the SEC might be the most competitive conference in the nation which is impressive as just 6 years ago the conference could’ve made a case for being the least competitive major conference.

Losers:

West Virginia

The Mountaineers have been on a losing streak losing 5 straight games and having their record drop to 13-7. The Mountaineers have been abysmal on the road this season and it continued against Arkansas. Dropping this game hurts the Mountaineers as they have to travel to #1 Baylor next followed by home games against #13 Texas Tech and #23 Iowa State. If they want a chance to be dancing in March they can’t afford to let the losing streak continue much longer.

Kansas

The Jayhawks season isn’t over by any stretch of the imagination but dropping a home game in the way that they did probably takes them out of the race for a 1 seed barring something crazy happening. The Jayhawks still have 2 games against #4 Baylor to make up for this loss, but they could drop those games just as easily as they could win them so right now their chances of being a 1 seed this year is slim.

Oklahoma State:

The Cowboys have their backs against the wall now, if they want to make the tournament they can only afford 1-2 losses and a good showing at the Big 12 tourney. Winning against Florida would’ve given the Cowboys a little bit more wiggle room as far as making it to the tourney. But now it's a tough uphill battle against a tough Big 12 schedule.

Mississippi State:

The Bulldogs are another team that now are fighting an uphill battle, though many knew Mississippi State was outmatched against #13 Texas Tech these are games that tournament teams win when they need ‘em and the Bulldogs needed this one and couldn't get it done. With the Bulldogs still yet to win a road game they are going to have to be near perfect or make a conference tourney run if they don’t want to sweat out selection Sunday.
